Far from a manual for conquering the realms of earth, air, fire, and water, The Satanic Bible is Anton LaVey's manifesto of a new religion separate from the "traditional" Judeo-Christian definitions of Satanism. While LaVey rails against the deceit of the Christian church and white magicians, he busily weaves his own deceptions. The Satanic Bible claims the heritage of a horde of evil deities--Bile', Dagon, Moloch, and Yao Tzin to name a few--but these ancient gods have no coherent connection between each other or to Satanism, except that all have been categorized by Christianity as "evil." Calling on these ancient names like a magician shouting, "Abracadabra," LaVey attempts to shatter the classical depiction of Satanism as a cult of black mass and child sacrifice. As the smoke clears, he leads us through a surprisingly logical argument in favor of a life focused on self-indulgence. This book taught me a lot about myself, and those that are around me.I'm not a sheep, I am a wolf. Dr. Anton Szandor LaVey gave me a mirror, and I saw myself within it. I have so much respect for the man who wrote this bold piece of one of a kind literature. I have so much new found respect for myself. For years religion and family has told me I am tainted and imperfect by simply being born, but it was this stranger... LaVey, who held out a metaphorical hand and pulled me up on my feet.Raised by a Christian family, a self declared Atheist for years as I grew up, and now a proud Satanist.Atheism was simply the blank canvas for me, but Satanism was the paint!I recommend this book to anyone. It doesn't matter if you open it out of suspicion you may be a Satanist, or if you are opening it as a curious theist or atheist. It matters little what background you come from, you will find the philosophy fascinating. There is nothing to fear by just reading a book. It's not evil, it will not damn you, it isn't trying to convert you... it is only offering you something to think about and understand.
This was a very different read compared to other religious books. Firstly, this isn't really a theological religion. When the book mentions "Satan" it's not literally talking about Satan. The book uses Satan as a metaphor for human desires. The book pretty much talks about how you should give in to your desires rather than suppress them. It's a very different take on things. If you're open minded and looking for something different and interesting, I suggest you pick this up.
This is neither a Bible nor is it "Satanic" in the sense of devil worshiping and infant sacrifice. Instead, this superbly written book is a revelation into the self, beautifully deconstructing the Christian notions of love, god, self-denial and human nature. As a youngster, I was told that the boogieman dwelt in the pages of this most unholy book, and that its author, Monsieur La Vey was surely being tormented in the deepest bowels of Hell suffering eternal damnation. After reading his book, I am renewed in my innate atheistic nature, believing in the possibility of human achievements, reveling in the knowledge that life is to be lived in the present, not fearing death, but embracing my ephemeral existence and living life ot the fullest; while not giving love to the undeserving, and not turning the other cheek to those who seek to abuse and perpetuate a notion of violence, hatred and superiority.
It's a good read as far as books go. I was disappointed LaVey considered Satanism a religion while opposing mainstream religions. Sure, his bitch was hypocrisy, but his pride comes across like an angry petulant child. Satanism has a better foundation than Christianity, but has some problems just the same as other religions. All in all it is a good read for research purposes.
I was a little nervous about ordering this book. I didn’t quite know what to expect. Ithought that my eyes would burst into flames and Satan would drag my soul to hell as soon as I opened the book and read the first line! Of course, none of that happened! Instead, I was surprised at how much sense this book actually made! This “Unholy†book actually makes a lot more sense than the “Holy†Bible makes! I recommend that everyone read this book. Your eyes won’t burst into flames and your soul won’t be dragged to Hell either! Instead, you’ll realize that this book makes a lot more sense than the “Holy†Bible does. If you don’t believe me, then read this book and see for yourself.
Right away if anyone is wondering, this is the first, and most likely best Satanic Bible. Satanism is in vogue right now, but this right here is the roots. LaVey's books started the positive association of diabolical symbols for religious misfits looking to have a way to define themselves. Many people look at this book as either a thing of evil, or a trendy way to show how rebellious they are. In reality it is neither, it is a diatribe written by a charismatic amateur philosopher who had a passion for the pageantry of ritual magic.I am not a member of the Church of Satan, nor do I speak for them good or ill. If one is interested in their thing, there is plenty of public material available.That being said, one does not have to be thinking of joining the Church of Satan, to read and benefit from this book.It has a very pragmatic, if at times cynical approach to navigating modern society, as well as a unique standpoint on religion and its purpose for humans.LaVey uses his own observations from life, as well as slightly embellished traditions of the past to set up a unique and fun loving religious philosophy.The second half of the book is about magic rituals, most of which I have done, and do not regret preforming. There is no blood sacrifice, or anything of a genuinely sinister nature involved with them. To me what LaVey's rituals are is a darkly dramatic parody of Western esoteric magick such as the Golden Dawn's system. Many practicing occultists and armchair witches might find some delicious inspiration in this section of the book.When I first read this book I was suffering from a terrible sense of existential dread, prior to this, my favorite piece of edgelord literature was Ligotti's Conspiracy Against the Human Race. I really like how LaVey encourages people to create an internal pseudo-mythology so that they may live with a sense of purpose and destiny.There is a lot to unpack here, and after reading it the first time, I immediately read the book again. Since then I have bought many copies of it for friends, and nearly destroyed the spine on my original.Unfortunately there are some downsides to the philosophy and associated assumption of the title Satanist. One of which is that people never react positively to someone self-identifying as a Satanist. Another is that the "social morality" that the Satanic Bible essentially endorses allows for cronyism and other anti-social behaviors when taken to its logical extreme.Anyone interested in seeing what Satanism is about, or anyone who thinks they might identify with the religious philosophy should certainly read this book. There is nothing inherently dangerous or wrong with reading and contemplating this book.Best of luck to everyone in pursuing their most indulgent existences.
Absolutely love! Literally the first paragraph says that if you don’t completely relate to this, Satanism is not for you! I love how straight up it is! Nothing that youd see in a church of god!
