I was moved to buy this book after having seen just a few sketches in some sample pages. Those few sketches made me smile, and warmed me with their confidence and whimsy. And now, having read all 159 pages, lingered long over every sketch, all in one sitting, I can tell you, that for me, this is simply the most joyful, tip filled, inspirational, and liberating art book I’ve ever read, and I will treasure it for a long time to come.I’ve read other guides and help books that read like they were written by the failed, frustrated artist we all know who is always browbeating you with all the things you’re doing wrong. Sheinberger’s sketches, text, advice, and suggestions never cause you to feel downcast or overwhelmed, but are always encouraging and uplifting.Sheinberger is a good writer too. His text is generally limited to 2 to 5 easy to read paragraphs that take up maybe half a page and is mixed on page with a sketch that illustrates the point he’s making. Subject matter is conveyed in a focused and concise fashion so that, while brief, will leave you feeling you’ve been given a lot of information in a very few words. The one real thing the text immediately branded into me was that, I’m sketching for me. Not reality, not for others, and not for anyone’s approval. I had long understood these notions intellectually, but reading it in this little book, while perusing his wonderfully unconventional sketches, the concept was burned, indelibly, into me emotionally. The topics he covers include the typical: sketch tools, sketch books, perspective, landscapes, etc., but he does it creatively, and in a gentle, and encouraging manner. There is practical advice about public sketching etiquette, taking time to sketch, what to sketch, and lots more. This may have all been covered in other art books, but I have either not read, or enjoyed, those like I did this one; I felt refreshed and vitalized after reading it.I readily recommend this book and sincerely think you will not regret it.
One of the best sketching books I have read, because it's also about the spirit of sketching, not just about tips and techniques, reminding the artist that their sketches are for them, not for the judgement of others. Highly recommended.
Another amazing and completely inspiring book by Felix!! His drawings are so free and fun and he shares his insight and approaches with enthusiasm.Definitely one of my most cherished books.
An indispensable guide for a semi-literate drawer trying to take an artistic journey a little later in life. It takes away so much fear and unravels the beauty and joy of trekking across old and new roads of discovery and joy without a damned electronic device.
This is an important approach to drawing that makes sense. What is the difference between snapshots and handmade drawing? It's in this book.
i really enjoyed reading this book; it's easy to read, grasp and more importantly, i didnt feel intimidated but rather, encouraged. often times, we, or i at least, tend to criticize ourselves that i am not good enough but it's not about comparing with others; sketching is just very personal and everyone interprets differently. there are also some text which i find inspiring. thank you, Felix!
It not only liberates you from the fear of experimentation, but is chuck full of good ideas for composition, subjects, materials and techniques. It is a pleasure to read because it feels liberating and at the same time, it has answers to all the things that made you look for a sketch/journaling book.
This book reminds us of the many uses sketching can have, whether it is meant for doodling, bringing concepts to life, journaling or simply keeping record of our creative endeavors. It explains “how†and “why†to use a sketchbook: things to consider before you start and how to use the tools of the trade; pens, pencils, watercolor, collage, etc. Followed by “what†and “how†to sketch: unleashing your imagination, basic elements of design, landscapes, people, animals, architecture, important things to consider when sketching and while traveling to other countries and a few words about digital media.I’m pleased that his own voice shows in every page, sort of like reading a memoir and attending a sketching workshop. I think that what makes this book unique is the anecdotes that Scheinberger shared from his journeys around the world accompany by the actual sketches he is talking about. It stands out from some other sketching books that (while still wonderful and helpful) remain impersonal and mostly technical. I got my eARC from NetGalley- Keep in mind that it wont tell you how to master drawing nor painting. If for example, you haven’t tried watercolors before, this book wont be a guide for mastering this or any other media (btw, if this is you, you should check out his other book "Urban Watercolor Sketching") However, it does give the information you will need for using different kind of media/tools for the purpose of sketching. Regardless of your drawing level at the moment, the tips will prove of unmeasurable value once you start your sketching journey.- If I had to give this as a present to an artistic friend or relative, I would add a new sketchbook and some pens (and if possible, order them from The Sketchbook Project by the Brooklyn Art Library). That would be an amazing gift, in my opinion.-This is the english version of "Mut zum Skizzenbuch" (so you can check those reviews as well).
